More on “The Letter,” from the Sender – October 1

My friend Cathy reports in with the entire story of The Letter she sent me (see previous post) from New Mexico, and the tiny, delightful post office she found. And let’s remember — some unsung postal employee on the Manhattan end did the same favor!

I have to tell you how happy I am that the card got to you. There’s more to the story. as you can imagine Abiquiu, NM post office is really small. It is situated just below where Georgia O’Keeffe’s home and studio is and of course where she mailed all her many letters to friends all over the world and her husband Alfred Stieglitz. So a nice bit of history.

I wrote the card knowing I couldn’t remember your #, and not have your zip code it might be lost in the One Bad Deed bin, but if I could at least find the zip, your carrier might be really nice and a Good Deed doer, so off I went to the PO. The post master is a wonderful woman all too eager to help me. I reminisced about days when we’d open a zip code book, she said “I still have mine!, I’m such a pack rat.” She loved the story, and she was the one who not only took her yellow highlighter to the envelope, but drew the heart around the note to your carrier. I loved it. We had a lovely chat about how the Post Office is changing and fortunately she would not be closing, but taking on 5 more Post Offices! can’t wait to connect with her and tell her that you received the note. No matter what the outcome, I knew upon my return that I would purchase your ONE GOOD DEED, and ask you to sign it for her and send it along. Just seems like the right thing to do! Right?
